‘Super food’ has been somewhat of a buzzword in the industry over the last 12 months. There’s even now a channel four programme specifically dedicated to glorious superfoods! With many of us coming round to the idea of fueling our bodies primarily with nutritionally dense foods, we are adding more and more superfoods to our daily diet, but which provide the most benefits…
Our favourite superfood, of course is chia seeds. The beautiful little whole grain seed is becoming well known in the health and fitness industry, primarily because of it’s multiple fantastic health benefits, but also because of how versatile it is. Grown natively in South America, chai seeds were an important part of the Aztecs and Mayans diets.
The Chia seed benefits are almost endless, first of all they are remarkably high in antioxidants and they also offer an all natural vegan friendly protein option, with 14% protein, which is impressively high compared to most plant based foods. They are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, as well as being low in carboydrates. Our favourite thing about chia seeds, is the fact that they can improve exercise performance just as much as a sports drink, but without all the added chemicals, making them the perfect pre workout snack, and post workout snack, due to the high protein.
Berries seem like such a simple addition to the diet, but just because we can pick them up in our local supermarket, doesn’t mean they’re not a super food. When added to your daily diet, berries provide a good dose of vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants, all of which are essential to your every day health. Just a handful or two of berries a day can help keep your immune system strong and your skin healthy. Berries make a great energy boosting food and a healthy snack for work.
Offering a complete protein food, quinoa contains all the essential amino acids your body needs to build muscle and repair itself, making quinoa a great post workout snack or meal. Alongside being high in protein, quinoa also contains healthy fats, lysine, vitamin B6, thiamine, potassium, copper, sinc, magnesium and folate; it’s safe to see why it’s a superfood! Try making a quinao porridge, swapping out your oats for the more nutritionally dense quinao.
We love a superfood at Chia Charge, which is why our products focus on nutritionally dense ingredients, designed to add energy for sports nutrition, providing snacks and meals for pre-workout, post workout, and even during!
