In principle smoothies are fantastic, you take a load of healthy ingredients blend them all together and hey presto you have a quick and nutritious breakfast. Which is well and good, unless like me you find that a liquid breakfast leaves you hungry by 10am. This is where the smoothie's heartier big brother steps in - The Smoothie Bowl.

What is a Smoothie Bowl

The simplest smoothie bowls are just what they sound like, a thick smoothie in a bowl that you eat with a spoon. Because however you are not limited to what you can drink through a straw, a smoothie bowl has the potential to be a thing of beauty made up of whatever you like. Here are our top three favourites for you to try this summer.

The Peanut Butter & Strawberry Bowl

Peanut butter and berries are a weakness of mine, there is just something about the combination of the salty peanut butter and the sweetness of the berries that I seem to be addicted to. So it should come as no surprise that this is my current favourite breakfast!

  • Blend together 2 tablespoons of  peanut butter, 240 ml almond milk, 150g of frozen strawberries, 1 small banana, a pinch ginger & cinnamon and a drizzle of honey until smooth and pour into 2 serving bowls.
  • Next dollop another tablespoon of peanut butter into a small bowl and blitz in the microwave for around 30 seconds. Stir vigorously and drizzle over each bowl. (If you're one for posting your food on insta this drizzling step is key)
  • Stylishly finish each bowl with sliced strawberries and anything else that takes your fancy.

The Mango Bowl

You only have to look at the vibrant colours of this smoothie bowl to know that it's absolutely full of good stuff. Not only that but it's light, tasty and naturally sweet, the perfect start to any summer day.

  • Throw 200 g of Frozen mango chunks, 100g of frozen pineapple pieces, 1 small banana, 300 ml of coconut water in a blender and blitz till smooth. Pour into 2 serving bowls.
  • Now just add those toppings, we like fresh mango pieces or berries and a little granola for the crunch. But it's up to you.

The Oaty Berry Bowl

Some days you feel like you need a bit more fuel in the tank and this is exactly where the Oaty Berry Bowl shines. It's the perfect mix between two phenomenal breakfasts - overnight night oats and a smoothie, providing both the nutrients of the fruit and the slow release energy of the oats.

  • Mix 40 g of oats, 1 frozen banana, a handful of fresh raspberries, 200 ml of milk in a blender and blitz till smooth. Pour into 2 serving bowls.
  • Top it off with whatever you fancy, we like chia seeds, berries and a few nuts for that added texture.
